The recievers arent an issue over here, years ago you were allowed automatic weapons over here (as long as you were a member of a gun club), but then in 1987 a guy called michael ryan went on a rampage in a small town called Hungerford one of the weapons was a type 56 That changed everything. There have been a couple of other incidents like this since then all having a massive impact on the gun law over here. Pre 96 'Old spec' deactivation leaves the cocking action intact, a rod is welded into the barrel and the bolt is machined so it wont strip a round, the weapon can be stripped cocked & dry fired these are the most desirable. But with a little work from somebody who knows what they are doing could probably fire again 'new spec' is the worst, they really go to town on it, especially weapons like the AK, the bolt is cut in half and welded in place so it cant be cocked, even the fire selector is welded so it doesnt move, the bottom hand guard is removed and a slot is cut into the barrel, a rod is then inserted and welded in place. The trigger mechanism is welded and all the firing pin mechanism is removed etc. So there you go, thats what we have to deal with over here, you can have an AK if you are in a gun club but it has to be adapted to be single shot only, having to be cocked after every shot.
Pretty crap really Just out of curiostity whats the probem with having original recievers over there? Pity you guys cant import 'de ac' weapons from here as the recievers are not tampered with, but that would be violation of the law on both sides i believe. Crazy thing is for what we pay for a 'deac' over here is probably twice the price of what you guys pay for a working weapon! Eg: AK47 OLD SPEC DEAC= £550 ($857.73) AK47 NEW SPEC DEAC= £295 ($460.05) I do a lot of refinishing of guns over here, stocks, blueing etc and was lucky enough to be given this free of charge on top of payment, nice little bonus i guess.
So my dad bought this back in the late 80s. It's a low serial number 001XX. I have the box and everything, and it's a folding stock.

So do all your AK's have to be US builds? Please forgive my ignorance, its a bit confusing for us over here, i would like to learn more, ive seen guys on youtube firing full autos, is it a state to state thing some can own full autos some states say no? Not all AKs in the US are built here.
Some are imported and modified with US parts. Some were imported before1989 and do not have US parts. All those are semiauto, except for war trophies brought in illegally before 1968 and registered during a brief amnesty during that year. Federal law regulates and taxes posession of automatic weapons. Some states allow such posession if it's in compliance with federal law, others prohibit it. Full auto guns were legal here until 1986, there was more involvement with the.gov agency known as ATF when purchasing F/A though.
Up until 1986 youcould purchase the gun, fill out and submit the proper forms and pay a $200 tax and if you passed the background check you got your F/A gun. Buying a semi-auto you just pay your money and they call in a quick background check from the gunstore and if you pass that you leave with your gun. Face to face sales are legal wth no background check in most states.
